Blind Sporting Council joins with the Womens and Children's
Hopsital Foundation's  Arts in Health Program
Help us to name the lizard

The Women's & Children's Hospital Foundation's Arts in Health Program aims to integrate the arts into the life of the Women's & Children's Hospital to improve people's health and well being.
As part of the Arts in Health program the Foundation worked with the Blind Sporting Council and the Women's and Children's Hospital to develop the Perception Project and commissioned an artwork specifically designed to raise awareness of the experiences of children with visual impairement and improve the Hospital experience for these children.
The Glass and ceramic Australian Monitor lizard was created specifically for touching, to be 'seen' or experienced through the hands.  While its sensuous form is visually appealing, its main attraction is the invitation to feel its textures and changes of temperature between materials and to follow its contours along its length.
Arts Exentrix is an Adelaide Hills based collective of visual artists, dancers, musicians and community art workers, who each contributed their individual style, technique and philosphy to create a truly inspiring and adventurous creation.
We now need your help to name the lizard,  if you have any suggestions for a name for the lizard, please send your suggestions, with your contact details to WCH Foundation, Locked Bag 5, Adelaide SA  5001
The lizard can be view at the Women's and Children's Hospital, Ground Floor, Good Friday Building, Gallery A.

Blind Sporting Council joins with Can Do 4 Kids to

support raise money for a Specialised Sporting and

Recreation area, at Modbury North.

Blind Sporting Council is working with another well know charity, Can Do 4 Kids to raise $10,000 for a Specialised Sporting and Recreation Area, at Modbury North.  The area will include areas for Basketball, Handball, Bat and Ball Games and Hop Scotch, ensuring these children will have the same access to sport as sighted children.  It will have a huge impact on their overall health and open up a new world for them.

Can Do 4 Kids is currently trying to raise $300,000 for its Modbury Site Stage 2 upgrade, to enable them to further provide specialised services for children and young people with a sensory impairment to enchance their quality of life, and empower clients and families to explore their dreams.  Over 400 families will benefit from this upgrade with 55% of those families living in the northern area.

We look forward to seeing the progress of the upgrade, which will benefit our young blind and vision impaired children.

Blind Sporting Council Joins with

Guide Dogs SA/NT to

support a Recreational Fishing Group

A fishing group is now being set up to provide Blind  and Vision Impaired Persons with Guide Dogs a new interest and assist them to engage in a healthy activity, increasing their communication skills and general well being.  The groups will consist of 6 people, and will meet at a metropolitan beach jetty, serviced by public transport, along with a skilled staff member.  Members of the group will be encouraged to use the public transport as a necessary step towards their independence.  3 different groups will meet over a 6 month period.

As a new initiative there will be set up costs which will include the cost of support staff, along with equipment, including fishing rods, tackle and any other necessary equipment, for this activity to be successful.  An introductory session will also be held for all interested persons to notify them of requirements such as duty of care for each other, along with learning basic fishing skills and the introduction of the equipment to be used.

Stay tuned for photos from the first Fishing group, to experience this exciting new initiative.

Blind Sporting Council again partners with

the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation

for the benefit of our blind and vision impaired children.

The Blind Sporting Council will be raising money for the following equipment and programs to assist in making the experience at the Children's Hospital a more pleasant one for our young Blind and Vision Impaired Children.

*   2 Ophthalmoscope/retinoscope sets at a cost of $2740

*   Visual Acuity Testing System, at a cost of $5000,

Both these are required to assist in the early detection of eye and vision complications.

*   Hospital facilities will also be improved via the Perception project.  This improvement will provide an experience primarily through perception such as touch, hearing, smell, balance and motion.  This project also aims to raise awareness of the experiences of children with visual impairment both in and out of the hospital environment.  The proposed changes to the hospital environment are expected to be completed by November and thereafter improve the hospital experience for young blind and vision impaired patients.

In 2009, the Blind SportingCouncil partnered with the WCH Foundation to raise funds to purchase two KOWA Portable Slit Lamps. This equipment allows children as young as two years old to be examined for early detection of eye disease, thus helping to protect the child's future eye sight.

 Blind Sporting Council support for

Womens and Childrens Hospital Foundation

The Blind Sporting Council in conjunction with the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation, has assisted to raise urgently needed funds to purchase two "KOWA Portable Slit Lamps"

The KOWA Portable Slit Lamps are examination tools of mangification to scan and check for eye diseases such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and gives a stereoscope view of the cornea and the interior of the eye.

Currently the Slit Lamp at the Women's and Children's Hospital, being a large machine makes it difficult to test young children.  The portable slip lamps allow children as young as two years old to be examined for early detection of eye disease, allowing the eye specialist to determine the treatment required for the child's future eye sight.  Approximately 200 children per annum will use the Slit Lamps in the Theatre Area and over 620 children per annum will use the slit lamp in the Outpatient area.
